Walk Your Way to Fat Loss

I’m gonna tell you the truth.

I’ve always read and heard about how walking is such fabulous exercise and how it’s one of the best ways to lose fat.

But… I never used to believe it.
Walking is so… easy!
Your heart rate doesn’t get up that high, you don’t get that sweaty.

Why does it consistently top the charts in terms of “best exercise?”

Welllll, they were right all along!

There are SO MANY health benefits of walking, but I’ll tell you my 3 favorites:

  1. For most of us, walking at a brisk pace puts you in the heart rate zone in which the greatest number of calories burned comes from fat.
You burn more calories from running for the same amount of time, obviously, but a greater ratio will come from carbs. Most fat burn per minute of activity = pretty nice benefit.
  2. Helps keep blood sugar under control. Don’t skim past this just because you don’t have diabetes! If you have any excess fat on your body, hypertension, high cholesterol, or really any heart disease or metabolic disease, you almost certainly have some degree of insulin resistance!
Walking after meals reduces your blood sugar levels which, over time, contributes to increased insulin sensitivity, and subsequently, better overall health and easier fat loss.
  3. It’s easy, accessible, not daunting or overwhelming for most people, requires no equipment, can be done anywhere, anytime, and you can do it with family or friends.
The best exercise is the exercise that gets done!

Here are some easy ways to get more walking into your day.
Your challenge: Choose just one and do it every day for the next week.

  • Morning stroll with your partner after dropping the kids off at camp/school
  • Midday movement break
  • After-dinner walk with the family
  • Walk around the neighborhood while listening to a podcast
  • Walk in place in front of the TV in the evening
  • Schedule a walk into your day to make sure it happens
  • Take a walk while on a phone call
  • Walk around the park/field while your kid is at practice
  • Take your dog on an extra walk each day – she won’t mind!
  • Encourage fun walking adventures with your family on the weekends: explore a new part of town or try a new hike
